Determined Luddites

cd cover imageThe Determined Luddites are one of Tucson, Arizona's enduring acoustic bands, utilizing a variety of styles and instruments in energetic live shows and recordings. They were voted "best folk band" in the 2004, 2005, and 2007 Tucson Weekly Tammie Awards.

  The Luddites are composed of:

  • Dan Davis: mandolin, mandola, guitar, harmonica, lead and harmony vox
  • Dan Hostetler:  D-28 guitar, mandolin,  lead and harmony vocals

  • Donny Russell:  mandolin, lead and harmony vocals

  • Jack Fandray:  bass guitar

The Luddites perform original, high energy alternative acoustic music, with a focus  on virtuoso instrumental performance, strong rhythm, and vocal harmonies.  A Luddite show spans a wide range of acoustic traditions from the British Isles, America, and the Caribbean, and styles from swing, jazz, folk, bluegrass, country, and punk.  Los dos Dans write and sing songs of their southwestern home;  tunes of love, heartache, beer, Jesus, desert vistas, and existential angst.  Dan D. switches between hot mandolin, mandola, and guitar, while Dan H. provides the D-28 flatpicking.  Donny Russell weighs in with his trademark force-of-nature mandolin tsunami and high-powered vocals.  Jack Fandray holds down the bottom on Fender bass, bustin' the odd swinging solo when the mood strikes.

Influences include everyone from John Coltrane, the Pogues,  Steve Earle, and Sam Bush, to David Grisman, the Clash, Django Reinhardt, and Joey Ramone.  Ballads, breakdowns, calypsos, fiddle tunes, jazz standards, and punk anthems, as well as acoustic nouveau instrumental showpieces, make up the Luddite repertoire.  Their live shows are fast, furious, beery, and occasionally unhinged, earning rave reviews, sometimes hasty exits, and a loyal following on the Tucson music scene.
